The fascination people have with programming their own music software and music can be explained by referring to the straightjacket feeling many musicians have expressed when working with commercial software.

CHUCK is an example of music software that is literally programmed while the music is playing, which is very engaging for the performer!
While all of this is quite new (still, 24 years since MIDI allowed instruments to talk to each other!), the end result will be greatly amplified ability for composers and performers to create unique, engaging soundstreams, much less limited by traditional “timbre sources”.
